What does a mismatched print-ready PDF actually cost your shop?

Cmsmart Product Designer (NBDesigner) renders the print file in Cmsmart Cloud the moment a design is processed, keeps a certificate of what was rendered and when, and refuses further edits once an item's artwork is approved — so the file your press gets is always the one the customer signed off on.

A print-ready PDF only earns that name if its page size, bleed and color space match what the press expects — that's the whole point of the PDF/X family of standards. Four parts carry a design from your storefront to that file, and 2.17 changed how the last two agree with each other:

How do you set up print-ready PDFs and the approval lock in NBDesigner 2.17?

Setting up print-ready output in Cmsmart Product Designer takes a handful of settings changes and no code: update the plugin, confirm how rendering runs, configure your output format, and turn on the approval lock — then every new order follows the same path to a print-ready PDF.

  1. Update to NBDesigner 2.17 or later from your license dashboard, or ask your host to run the update — versions before 2.15.0 had an unauthenticated file-upload security issue that's since been fixed, so don't stay on an old version longer than you have to.
  2. Go to WooCommerce → Settings → Cmsmart → General and confirm Render print PDFs in the cloud is on (the default), or switch to your own server if you'd rather keep rendering in-house.
  3. Open Settings → Output and turn on Auto export design to PDF, so both Process and the order-status change queue a print-ready render.
  4. In the same tab, set your preferred ICC profile and confirm PDF is listed as a download or attachment format, so your shop always gets a CMYK-ready file. ICC profiles are what keep that color consistent from screen to press.
  5. Open Printing Options and check each product's price matrix and conditional options still match your current price list — see our guide to configuring print pricing options if you're setting these up for the first time, or the pricing engine service if your rules are more complex than a matrix.
  6. On an order with a design, open the item and run Create PDF with the default settings once, to confirm the print-ready PDF renders and shows Ready with a timestamp and renderer.
  7. Turn on the Customer Design approval box on the order screen, and decide who approves artwork in your shop: production lead, account manager, or the customer through My Account.
  8. Test the lock: approve a design, then try to save over it from the online designer. You should see a clear refusal message instead of a silent overwrite.
  9. Turn on Preflight Quality Checker (AI Preflight) under Cmsmart Cloud → AI Tools, set your required DPI, and choose whether it runs automatically on new orders or only when you click it.

Do I need to reinstall the plugin to get the 2.17 print-ready PDF behavior?

No. If you're on a recent version, update through your license dashboard; the print-ready renderer, approved-artwork lock and Settings → Output changes apply automatically on your next order.

What happened to the template and layer tools from the old 2.7.5 release?

Does the approved-artwork lock stop us from fixing a mistake after approval?

It stops silent overwrites, not your team. A declined or re-approved design can still be edited through the normal workflow, and shops can widen or narrow the lock with the nbd_ordered_design_edit_locked filter.
