Applies to Cmsmart Product Designer (NBDesigner) 2.18.0 · Updated October 2026. This guide covers product size options for WooCommerce: the Size printing-option field, the per-size price matrix, and where a chosen size shows up in cart, order and print files. For buyer-typed dimensions on banners, decals or anything cut to measure, see how to configure Custom dimension instead.

In short

  • A preset Size field turns one design-enabled product into a catalog of sizes a buyer picks from a list, each with its own price step and its own print canvas.
  • You build it once in Printing Options, attach it to a product (or a whole category), and the plugin carries the chosen size through cart, order and the print-ready PDF automatically.
  • It takes one Printing Option, a handful of price-matrix rows and a product assignment — no code, no separate product per size.

What does it cost you when sizing is an afterthought?

Every size you can't offer, or offer with the wrong canvas, is a sale you lose or a reprint you pay for. Cmsmart Product Designer's Size field fixes both by tying each size to its own price and print geometry inside one product.

Talk to any print shop owner and the same handful of problems come up:

  • One size, one product. Without a Size option, a shop that wants S/M/L/XL has to clone the product four times, four designs, four sets of templates to keep in sync.
  • Wrong canvas, right order. A design built for a small card looks stretched or cropped on a large poster if the print file doesn't track the size the buyer actually picked.
  • Pricing by hand. Staff re-typing a price for every size and material combination is slow and drifts out of date the moment a supplier changes a sheet price.
  • Returns and reprints. Fit and size are already the single biggest driver of returns in apparel: a 2023 Coresight Research survey of US apparel brands found size/fit cited by 53% of respondents as the top reason for a return, with the category's online return rate running at 24.4%. A custom-print shop carries the same risk whenever a size selector is unclear or a canvas doesn't match what ships.
  • Returns cost more online than in a store. Across all categories, the National Retail Federation estimates 19.3% of online sales will be returned in 2025 — every one of those is a reprint, a restock or a refund that a clear size and an accurate print file can prevent.

Cmsmart insight: the most common mistake we see isn't missing sizes — it's a Size field that changes the price but not the print geometry. Check that every size option in your price matrix has a matching canvas size in the designer config before you launch it, not after the first order ships wrong.

What would it look like if every size just worked?

Picture a product page where Size sits next to Color as a normal dropdown: pick M, the price updates, start the designer and the canvas is already the right shape for a medium. Cmsmart Product Designer does exactly that out of the box.

Example scenario: a buyer lands on a t-shirt product at 9pm. They pick a color, then a size from S to XL, see the total update, and click Start Design. The designer opens already sized for that variant, so nothing needs resizing by hand. They add text, process the design, and add it to the cart — the cart line reads "Color: Light Grey, Size: S" next to the design preview, exactly as it was built. A second buyer orders the same shirt in three sizes for a team event, using the same bulk-variation table, in one trip through checkout. Nothing about this needs a developer once it's configured; it is the normal Cmsmart flow.

The Size field renders as a normal variation picker — here combined with a bulk-variation table so a buyer can order several sizes of the same design in one line.

How does Cmsmart turn one product into a full size range?

Cmsmart Product Designer builds sizing from three pieces that already ship in the plugin: a Size field in Printing Options, a price matrix per size, and a print-ready render that reads the same page geometry the buyer saw on screen.

Four building blocks, all in the plugin today:

  • Printing Options → Size field. A dedicated field type (distinct from Custom dimension) that lists preset sizes as a dropdown, swatches or a table.
  • Price matrix. Each size row carries its own price delta, and can combine with material or color rows for a full matrix (small/silk, large/matte, and so on).
  • Online designer canvas. The canvas opens at the design area configured for the chosen size, so artwork is built at the right scale instead of being stretched later.
  • Print-ready PDF that matches the order. Since 2.17, the automatic export, the manual Create PDF button and the cloud renderer all read the same page geometry for a design, so the file an admin downloads is the file that was priced and previewed, instead of a print file that drifts from what the canvas showed.

Printing Options is also where Size and Custom dimension live side by side as separate field types — useful to see once, since the two are easy to conflate:

Where a store needs more than a fixed list or a free-form box — a guided fit finder, a size chart synced to a garment spec sheet, or sizes that vary by printing method — that is custom pricing-engine work, covered in the going-further section below.

What's the business value of getting Size right?

A correct Cmsmart Size setup turns into fewer support tickets, fewer reprints and a higher average order value when buyers can add several sizes to the cart in one visit — all without adding a single extra product listing to the WooCommerce catalog or re-pricing anything by hand.

BenefitHow it shows up in your businessKPI to track
One product, many sizesCatalog stays small; new sizes are a price-matrix row, not a new product listingProducts per SKU family
Canvas matches the orderFewer "it printed too small/cropped" support tickets and reprintsReprint rate per 100 orders
Bulk size orderingA buyer orders a team or family's worth of sizes in one checkoutAverage order value, units per order
Accurate print-ready filesProduction staff open Create PDF and get the file that was already priced and previewedTime from order to print-ready file

Rough ROI worksheet (use your own numbers): take the reprints you currently run per month caused by a size or canvas mismatch (R) multiplied by your cost per reprint (C) — that's money a correct Size setup gets back. Add the orders per month where a buyer would order more than one size if it were one click (O) multiplied by the extra units per order you'd expect (U) multiplied by your average unit price (P): Savings + extra revenue = (R × C) + (O × U × P). Run it with your own reprint count, your own reprint cost and your own order volume — even a handful of avoided reprints a month typically covers the setup before any bulk-order upside is counted.

Print-on-demand is also simply a bigger market to be selling into correctly: the global print-on-demand market was valued at $10.8 billion in 2025, with Grand View Research projecting $13.1 billion in 2026 at a 23.6% CAGR — apparel and accessories are the categories where a clean size setup matters most.

How do you set up product size options for WooCommerce?

In Cmsmart Product Designer, you configure Size once in Printing Options, attach it to a product or category, fill in the price matrix, then confirm the designer canvas matches each size — after that, every buyer sees it as a normal variation picker on the product page.

Steps, using the current 2.18.0 admin screens:

  1. Go to Cmsmart → Product manager and confirm the product has Designer set to Enabled. A product needs the online designer turned on before any printing option applies to it.
  2. Open Cmsmart → Printing options and check whether an option set already covers this product (the list shows products and categories it currently applies to).
  3. Click Add new (or edit an existing set) to open the option editor.
  4. Under Online design fields, add the Size field (not Custom dimension — that's a separate field for buyer-typed measurements).
  5. Name the sizes you want to sell (for example S, M, L, XL, or 4x6, 5x7, 8x10) as the field's choices.
  6. Build the price matrix: set a price delta for each size, combining with Material or Color rows if the product has them.
  7. Under Apply for, assign the option set to the product (or a whole category, for example every T-shirt).
  8. Open the product's Designer config and confirm each size has a matching design area/canvas, so artwork isn't stretched between sizes.
  9. Save, then open the storefront product page and run through it as a buyer: pick a size, confirm the price updates, start the design, process it, and check the cart line shows the size you chose.

Once it's live, the size a buyer chose follows the order all the way through: it shows in the cart line, on the order detail screen, and the print-ready PDF is rendered at that size's page geometry — the same consistency the 2.17 release brought to custom-dimension orders now applies to every preset size too.

For the Custom dimension field instead — buyer-typed width and height with min/max limits, common on banners and decals — see how to configure Custom dimension and where it displays. For a non-rectangular canvas (die-cut stickers, odd-shaped panels), see how to configure Area design shape.

What can Cmsmart build beyond the built-in Size field?

The Size field covers a fixed list of preset sizes well; for a size chart that adapts per product line, a fit recommendation tool, or sizes that change by print method, Cmsmart builds it as custom development on top of the plugin.

Innovative extensions we build for stores that outgrow a flat size list:

  • Dynamic size charts per product line. Cmsmart builds a size-chart lookup synced to a spec sheet, so apparel sizes stay accurate as a supplier's measurements change, instead of being retyped into the price matrix by hand.
  • Fit/size recommendation. A short buyer questionnaire or measurement input that suggests the right size before they commit, aimed at the same size/fit uncertainty that drives returns industry-wide.
  • Size-dependent print methods. Where a small size prints digitally but a large one needs a different press or substrate, Cmsmart builds routing logic so the right production path is chosen automatically by size.
  • ERP/MIS-synced pricing. For B2B shops, a price matrix pulled live from an ERP or MIS system instead of maintained inside WordPress, so quantity and size pricing never drifts from the system of record.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a Size option and a Custom dimension field?

Size is a preset list (S/M/L, 4x6/5x7/8x10) that a buyer picks from, priced per size in the matrix. Custom dimension is a free-form width/height input with min/max limits for products cut to a measurement the buyer provides, such as banners. See configuring Custom dimension for that flow.

Does each size need its own design template?

No — one design can serve every size as long as each size's design area is configured correctly, so the canvas scales the layout rather than stretching a fixed-size artwork.

Can a buyer order more than one size of the same design at checkout?

Yes. Combined with a bulk-variation table, a buyer can set quantities for several sizes of the same design and add them to the cart in one action, which is how the t-shirt example above works.

Will changing the Size automatically change the price?

Yes, once the size is in the price matrix with its own delta. Combine it with Material, Color or Quantity rows for a full matrix instead of a single flat price.

How long does it take Cmsmart to set this up for an existing catalog?

A single product's Size option is a short configuration task. A full catalog migration (converting many separate size-based products into Size-option variants, with a price matrix per line) is scoped as a short project — request a quote with your current catalog size.

Can Cmsmart connect our Size pricing to our own ERP or MIS?

Yes, as custom development: Cmsmart builds an integration that pulls size and quantity pricing from your ERP/MIS instead of maintaining it inside WordPress, covered in the B2B web-to-print work we do for larger catalogs.
