Applies to Cmsmart Product Designer (NBDesigner) 2.17.0 · Updated October 2026. Based on live buyer and admin flows captured on the Cmsmart demo store (nbdesigner.cmsmart.net) and the 2.17.0 changelog.

In short

  • Outcome: run invitations, business cards, apparel, stickers and more from one WooCommerce catalog instead of buying and learning a different design plugin for every product line.
  • How it works: Cmsmart Product Designer turns on per product in Product Manager, and every product you enable shares one online designer, one price-matrix engine and one order queue.
  • What it takes: WooCommerce, the Cmsmart Product Designer plugin, and a short setup pass per product (production specs, print options, templates); new product types your store needs beyond the standard catalog are a Cmsmart custom build.

Demand for that kind of expansion is real: the global print-on-demand and custom-product market was valued at USD 10.8 billion in 2025, Grand View Research, driven mostly by stores adding personalized categories to an existing range rather than launching single-product shops.

What does running a different customizer for every product line actually cost you?

Cmsmart replaces a stack of single-purpose customizer plugins with one product designer every product line shares, so your team stops rebuilding checkouts, templates and print pipelines each time it adds a category.

Most stores selling more than one customizable product didn't plan it that way: a sticker plugin first, then a separate app for apparel, then a one-off integration for signage. None of this is one line item, but it adds up in places owners feel weekly:

  • Two or three admin logins to check a single day's orders, because each tool keeps its own order list.
  • A price matrix rebuilt from scratch every time a new product type needs quantity breaks or add-ons.
  • Inconsistent print files — one tool exports a print-ready PDF with bleed and CMYK, another hands production a flattened preview to redo by hand.
  • Staff retraining every time a new hire has to learn a second or third editor to process an order correctly.
  • A buyer experience that changes per category — a fast way to lose a repeat customer who can't find the same button they used last month.

If your team spends even 30 minutes a day reconciling orders or files between two tools, that is roughly 125 hours a year spent on plumbing instead of production (30 min × ~250 working days) — multiply by staff hourly cost to see what one shared catalog is worth.

What does it look like when every product line runs through one catalog?

With Cmsmart, a buyer who personalizes an invitation, a mug and a T-shirt in the same cart sees the same "Start design" button, the same online designer and the same checkout every time — and your production team sees all three orders land in the same queue.

Example scenario: a stationery-and-gifts store that already sells invitations and business cards decides to add stickers and personalized mugs for the holiday season. Instead of a second vendor contract and a new editor to learn, the owner enables the new products in the same Product Manager and points them at the same price-matrix rules. Buyers get one consistent "design it yourself" experience across the catalog; the production lead opens one Orders screen each morning and sees every job sorted by status, not by which plugin took the order.

Multi-product online designer plugin for WooCommerce: invitation product page with the Start and upload design button
The same "Start and upload design" entry point appears on every product the catalog has enabled.

That consistency is a plugin boundary, not a theme choice: once a product has the Online Designer turned on in Product Manager, it inherits the same editor, templates and checkout handling as every other enabled product. See our walkthrough of the Cmsmart WooCommerce product customizer for a single product line if that is closer to your starting point — this page is about running many lines at once.

How does Cmsmart's solution — a multi-product online designer plugin for WooCommerce — cover every product type?

Cmsmart Product Designer separates "what a product looks like" from "how design and pricing work," so invitations, apparel and signage share one design engine, print pipeline and order system while each keeps its own template and price.

Four building blocks make this possible, and today's demo catalog shows all four at once:

  • Product Manager (catalog layer). Every product that should carry the online designer is switched on here — the demo store has 34 designer-enabled products across stationery, apparel, marketing materials and print-option items, 29 of them with ready-made templates.
  • Online Designer (shared design engine). One canvas editor — text, cliparts, photos, layers, templates — is reused by every enabled product; per-product settings live in that product's own Designer config, not in separate software.
  • Printing Options (shared pricing engine). Price-matrix rules and quantity breaks are built once per option set, then applied to as many products as need them, instead of being re-typed per category.
  • Orders, Files and print-ready output (shared production pipeline). Every order lands in the same Orders queue, with the same Files index, print-ready PDF status and Customer Design approval box.

Cmsmart insight: the mistake we see most often is treating every new product category as a new integration project. In practice, adding a line to an existing Cmsmart catalog is a product-configuration task — production specs, print options, a starter template — not new software to connect. Save the integration effort for what genuinely needs custom work: ERP sync, ordering rules unique to your trade, or a product type the standard editor was never built for.

What is not built into the standard catalog is anything store-specific: a bespoke configurator for an industry Cmsmart has not templated, a sync to your ERP or MIS, or a pricing rule that depends on data outside WooCommerce. Those are custom development, covered below, not a gap in the plugin. WooCommerce is a deliberate foundation here, not an afterthought: it is the largest ecommerce platform by store count, with 33.4% global market share and 4.53 million active stores as of August 2025, StoreLeads.

What is the business value of consolidating onto one product designer?

A shared Cmsmart catalog turns catalog expansion into a configuration task instead of a procurement project, which shows up in staff time, reprint rates and how fast a new product line starts taking orders.

BenefitHow it shows up in your businessKPI to track
Faster catalog expansionA new product type goes live as a Product Manager configuration task, not a new vendor contractDays from "decide to add a product" to "live for sale"
Less admin overheadOne Orders screen, one Files index and one approval box across every product lineStaff hours per week spent reconciling orders across tools
Fewer print mistakesEvery product's print file comes from the same print-ready pipeline instead of a different export per toolReprint rate per 100 orders
Consistent buyer experienceThe same design flow and checkout across categories supports repeat purchasesRepeat-customer rate across product categories

Rough ROI worksheet: take the number of product lines on separate tools (N), the hours per week your team spends reconciling orders or files between them (H), and your blended staff hourly cost (C). N × H × C × 52 estimates what fragmentation costs you a year in staff time alone, before reprints or lost repeat sales. If that number is significant, our product designer customization service is the starting point for consolidating onto one catalog.

How do you set up one product to run on the Cmsmart catalog?

Setting up a product on Cmsmart Product Designer means turning on the designer, telling it how to print, and attaching a price rule and a starting template — the same checklist whether it is your first product or your twentieth.

These steps assume the plugin is installed and licensed; they are what changes each time you add a product to an existing catalog:

  1. Open Cmsmart → Products (Product Manager) and either edit an existing product or add a new one.
  2. Under Online Designer, tick Enable the Online Designer for this product and choose a 1-sided or 2-sided canvas preset.
  3. Open Designer config and set the Production specs: material, bleed area, print resolution (DPI) and color profile (RGB for preview, CMYK for print).
  4. Set a realistic Production time in business days so order statuses line up with your actual shop.
  5. Go to Cmsmart → Printing Options and either reuse an existing price-matrix option set or create a new one, then apply it to the product.
  6. From Manager → Templates, assign at least one starter template so buyers do not face a blank canvas.
  7. Open the product on the storefront and run the buyer flow: choose Start and upload design, add a line of text, and confirm it saves as Your artwork next to Add to cart.
  8. Add the item to cart and continue to checkout to confirm the design and any print-option pricing carry through (you can stop before payment).
  9. Back in wp-admin → Cmsmart → Orders, confirm the test order's item shows its design, then open Create PDF to generate the print-ready file.
  10. Check the Customer Design box on the WooCommerce order screen for approve/decline controls, including on stores using WooCommerce's High-Performance Order Storage (HPOS), where 2.17.0 fixed this box not loading.

On the production side, every order from every product line shares one view:

One Orders queue carrying every product type, sorted by production status, not by which tool took the order.

Two 2.17.0 fixes matter once several product lines share that queue. Print-ready PDF that matches the order: automatic print renders now read the same page geometry — including a buyer's custom width and height — as the manual Create PDF button, so a custom-size card or sticker no longer risks a mismatched file. The approved-artwork lock: once approved, a design can't be saved over from any entry point, so it can't change after production has queued the print-ready file.

How far can you take this with custom development?

Cmsmart builds the product types, pricing logic and integrations the standard catalog does not cover as custom development on top of the same plugin, so your catalog is not limited to what ships by default.

Most stores eventually want something the shared catalog does not do out of the box. Cmsmart builds these as custom development on the same plugin:

  • Bespoke product types with Product Builder. Product Builder ships in the plugin, so you can model configurable products beyond a flat canvas yourself with component, text and image fields set up through Printing Options; for unusual products, Cmsmart builds the specific component set and bespoke flow as custom development.
  • Batch production tooling. For high volumes of small items — gang-sheet style batching across many designs — Cmsmart builds the layout tooling your press needs; see our case study on batch design with a gang-sheet builder.
  • ERP/MIS and ordering integrations. Pushing catalog, pricing or order status data to a print-shop MIS or internal ordering system is scoped against your systems.
  • Custom pricing rules. Pricing logic outside the standard price matrix — tiered B2B accounts, per-customer contracts, dynamic material costs — becomes a custom pricing engine extension.
  • B2B approval and PO workflows. Multi-step internal approval before production, beyond the built-in Customer Design approve/decline box, is a workflow Cmsmart builds around your sign-off process.

Delivery follows one path: discovery, solution design, build sprints, QA and launch — the model behind our ecommerce project delivery work.

Frequently asked questions

How many product types can one Cmsmart Product Designer catalog run?

There is no plugin-side limit; the demo catalog used in this guide runs 34 designer-enabled products across stationery, apparel, marketing materials and print-option items from one install.

Do I need a separate plugin for apparel, stationery and signage?

No. Any WooCommerce product gets the same online designer, price-matrix engine and order queue once enabled in Product Manager with its production specs and print options set.

Can Cmsmart build a product type the standard catalog doesn't cover?

Yes, as custom development: Cmsmart designs and builds bespoke product configurations, using the plugin's Product Builder or a fully custom flow, for product types not in the standard templates.

How long does it take to add a new product line to an existing catalog?

Enabling an existing product type with its own templates and print options is typically a same-day task; a genuinely new, custom product type is scoped individually.

Does the print-ready PDF always match what the customer approved?

Since 2.17.0, the automatic print render and the manual Create PDF button read the same page geometry, including a buyer's custom size, and an approved design is locked against further edits — so the PDF matches the approved artwork.

Can this connect to our ERP or print-shop MIS?

Not out of the box. Syncing catalog, pricing or order status with an ERP or MIS is custom integration work Cmsmart scopes against your specific systems.
