Applies to Cmsmart Product Designer (NBDesigner) 2.17.0 · Updated October 2026. Captures below are from a live nbdesigner.cmsmart.net install; the Settings screen was running the 2.18.0-dev build, and every feature described is confirmed in the 2.17.0 changelog or visible on screen.

In short

  • Outcome: your store stops being the only source of new artwork — approved designers list their work on your catalog and you keep a cut, without hiring an in-house design team.
  • How it works: Cmsmart Product Designer's built-in Design Launcher lets customers apply to become designers, submit solid or editable artwork for review, and get paid through a withdraw-request queue once you approve a sale.
  • What it takes: a design-enabled product, the Designers tab turned on in Settings, and an admin who reviews submissions the same way you already review customer artwork.

What does it cost your print shop to keep designing everything in-house?

Cmsmart Product Designer removes the in-house design bottleneck by opening your catalog to outside designers through the Design Launcher, so new artwork reaches customers without your team drawing every piece or your admin becoming a full-time art reviewer.

A few pains show up in almost every store that relies on one internal design pipeline:

  • One design desk, every request. A single designer (or you) turns around every new T-shirt, invitation or sticker concept, so the catalog only grows as fast as that one person works.
  • Trend cycles move faster than hiring. Holiday, fandom and local-team artwork needs fresh designs on a schedule a one-person pipeline can't keep up with.
  • Freelancers you already pay stay outside your store. Artwork commissioned by email and invoice is not searchable, sellable or trackable inside WooCommerce.
  • Manual proofing for every submission. Checking a file for bleed, safe zone and minimum DPI by hand doesn't scale past one or two contributors.
  • Payout admin lives in spreadsheets. Without a built-in balance and withdraw flow, paying contributors means tracking who sold what by hand.

Work out your own cost of the status quo: (hours per week on new artwork) × (your fully loaded hourly design cost) × 52 is what an all in-house catalog costs you every year, before a single marketplace sale happens.

What would a designer marketplace inside your store look like?

With Cmsmart's Design Launcher switched on, your store becomes a two-sided catalog: shoppers buy as usual, and a pool of approved designers keeps adding new products you never had to draw, review, or chase down by email.

Example scenario. A print shop selling blank stationery and apparel opens "Become a designer" in My Account. An illustrator applies, gets approved, and uploads six invitation templates. The admin reviews them that afternoon — three go live, three come back with a note about missing bleed. A shopper finds one of the live templates two weeks later, personalizes the names and date, and checks out. The order lands in the usual Orders screen, a print-ready PDF renders automatically, and the designer's balance updates for their next withdrawal. Nobody on staff drew the invitation or negotiated a flat fee by email.

That is the shift: instead of commissioning designs one at a time, you run a review queue, and your catalog grows from submissions instead of staff hours. Talk to an ecommerce expert about scoping it for your catalog.

Sell designs WooCommerce designer marketplace style: how does Cmsmart build it?

Cmsmart Product Designer's Design Launcher adds designer accounts, a submission-and-review queue, and a withdraw-request ledger directly inside WooCommerce, so a design that's approved today can be bought, approved as artwork and rendered print-ready without leaving the plugin.

Six building blocks make up the marketplace, and the table below is honest about which ones are in the plugin today versus what Cmsmart builds for stores that need more:

  • Designer accounts — a "Become a designer" option in My Account; you accept or decline each request. In the plugin.
  • Design submission — Design store → Designs → Start designing, uploading a solid design or building an editable one. In the plugin.
  • Admin review queue — NBDesigner → Designers lists submissions and applications for accept/decline. In the plugin (menu location confirmed in the 2.14.0 changelog, which grouped Designers under Catalog & assets).
  • Storefront & checkout — a live design behaves like any other catalog product. In the plugin — see the captures below.
  • Production pipeline — marketplace orders render through the same renderer as every other order, with the 2.17 print-ready PDF status and approved-artwork lock. In the plugin.
  • Payout automation, commission tiers, tax forms — the plugin tracks a balance and manual withdraw requests; wiring that into a payment processor or accounting system is custom development.

The Designers tab sits in NBDesigner's Settings, next to General, Upload design and Output — this is where the Design Launcher is switched on.

We don't have a fresh capture of the Designers tab's own screen in this job (the public demo's designer-store URL wasn't reachable when these shots were taken), so the setup steps below follow the plugin's documented labels rather than a screenshot of that exact panel.

Cmsmart insight: decide up front whether a design-enabled product accepts solid artwork, editable templates, or both. Solid designs need the least review (check the file once, it's done); editable templates need more care, because every buyer customization — a longer name, a different color — has to still respect the bleed and safe zone the designer set.

What's the business value of letting designers sell through your store?

Cmsmart's designer marketplace turns catalog growth into a cost you only pay after a sale, instead of a fixed design budget — and keeps the print-ready file pipeline automatic so a crowdsourced design still arrives production-ready.

BenefitHow it shows up in your businessKPI to track
Lower fixed design costYou pay designers a share of sales, not a salary or flat commission per conceptDesign spend as % of marketplace revenue
Faster catalog growthMultiple designers submit in parallel instead of one queue to one personNew design-enabled SKUs added per month
Wider product-market fitOutside designers bring niches and styles your own team wouldn't think to makeShare of orders from marketplace vs. house designs
Consistent production qualityEvery marketplace order still renders through the same print-ready PDF pipelineReprint rate on marketplace vs. house-designed orders

ROI worksheet (fill in your own numbers):

Monthly value of catalog growth = (new design-enabled products added per month via the marketplace) × (average orders per product per month) × (average order value) × (your margin after the designer's share).

Monthly cost avoided = (hours per month your team would have spent drawing the same number of designs) × (fully loaded design hourly cost).

Compare the two before deciding what commission share makes sense for your catalog.

Why this matters now: the print-on-demand market is projected to grow from $8.1 billion in 2025 to $10.02 billion in 2026, a 23.6% CAGR (The Business Research Company, 2026), and individual creators are its fastest-growing segment, at a 27.2% CAGR through 2031 (Mordor Intelligence, 2026) — exactly the audience a designer marketplace gives you direct access to.

How do you set up the Design Launcher marketplace?

Setting up Cmsmart's designer marketplace means turning on the Designers tab, deciding which products accept designer submissions, and reviewing applications the same way you already approve order artwork — no separate plugin to install or configure.

Confirm you're on a current release before you start: Plugins → the active Cmsmart row shows the installed version.

Turn on the marketplace (admin, one-time):

  1. Go to NBDesigner → Settings → Designers (the tab shown above, next to General, Upload design and Output) and enable the designer store.
  2. Save the permalink structure prompt that appears — designer-store URLs won't resolve until you do.
  3. Open (or create) the product you want designers to submit artwork for, and turn on the option to allow designer uploads and sales for that product.
  4. Decide whether that product accepts solid, ready-to-print uploads, editable online-designer templates, or both.
  5. Set your withdrawal rules — minimum withdrawal amount and how often you settle requests — so payouts match how your business already pays contractors.

How a design goes from application to sale:

  1. A customer opens My Account and selects "Become a designer," then fills in their details for your review.
  2. You accept or decline the application from the Designers admin screen — the same accept/decline pattern used for order artwork.
  3. The approved designer goes to Design store → Designs → Start designing and picks a product to attach work to.
  4. They upload a complete, print-ready file, or build an editable design using the same online designer your shoppers use.
  5. The submission lands in your review queue; you accept it to publish, or decline it with a reason, exactly like approving a buyer's order artwork.
  6. Once live, shoppers find and buy it like any other catalog product — the same product page, design chooser, cart and checkout shown below.
  7. The order appears in Orders, renders a print-ready PDF automatically, and the designer's balance updates for their next withdrawal request.

How far can you take the marketplace with custom development?

Cmsmart builds the integrations the Design Launcher doesn't ship with — automated payouts, AI quality checks on submissions and custom commission rules — as custom development on top of the plugin's built-in review queue and balance tracking.

The built-in Design Launcher covers applications, submissions, review and a manual withdraw queue. Stores that outgrow manual payouts typically ask Cmsmart to build:

  • Automated payouts. Cmsmart connects the balance ledger to PayPal Payouts or Stripe Connect through the WooCommerce REST API, so approved balances pay out on a schedule.
  • AI preflight on submissions. Cmsmart's AI Preflight already checks order artwork for bleed, safe zone and DPI; we wire the same check into the submission queue, before a design reaches review.
  • Tiered commission rules. A flat split doesn't fit every catalog — Cmsmart builds rules that pay top-performing designers a higher share, or waive fees on first sales.
  • A branded designer storefront. A dedicated landing page and profile per designer, separate from your main shop pages.
  • ERP/MIS and tax integration. For marketplaces that need 1099s or VAT handling per designer, Cmsmart connects Design Launcher data to your accounting or ERP system.

Every custom build follows the same delivery model as the rest of Cmsmart's work: discovery, a written solution design, milestone-based sprints, QA, launch and ongoing support — see how that runs on the Ecommerce Projects page.

Frequently asked questions about the Cmsmart designer marketplace

Is the designer marketplace a separate plugin, or part of Cmsmart Product Designer?

It's built into Cmsmart Product Designer (NBDesigner) as the Design Launcher — nothing extra to install. The Designers tab sits in the plugin's own Settings screen, and the Designers admin menu has been part of the Catalog & assets group since at least the 2.14.0 release.

How do designers get paid when their design sells?

The plugin tracks each designer's balance and lets them submit withdraw requests from their dashboard; you settle those manually by default. If you need automatic payouts to a bank account or PayPal on a schedule, that's a custom-development integration built on top of the balance data.

Can we control who's allowed to become a designer?

Yes. Every "Become a designer" application goes to an admin review queue first — nobody can submit artwork until you've accepted their application, and you can decline at any time.

What stops a designer from uploading artwork that isn't print-ready?

Every submission goes through the same accept/decline review your team uses for order artwork, so you catch bleed, safe-zone and resolution problems before a design goes live. Running that check automatically, instead of by eye, is the AI preflight integration described above.

Does a marketplace sale still produce a print-ready PDF automatically?

Yes. A marketplace design is a normal catalog product once it's approved, so its orders go through the same 2.17 print-ready PDF pipeline as every other order — the renderer, Create PDF and the order screen all read the same page geometry, including custom sizes.

Can Cmsmart customize the commission split or connect it to our accounting system?

Yes — commission tiers, scheduled payouts and ERP or tax integrations aren't in the stock plugin, so Cmsmart builds them as custom development scoped to how your store already pays contributors.
