Applies to Cmsmart Product Designer (NBDesigner) 2.17.0 · Updated October 2026. How to remove backgrounds and upscale customer photos with the built-in AI image tools, the admin controls that run them, and where custom development starts.

In short

  • Cmsmart Product Designer can remove the background from a customer's uploaded photo and upscale a low-resolution one, right inside the online designer, so a bad photo stops turning into a bad print or a lost sale.
  • Both tools call the Cmsmart Cloud AI service, metered in tokens you control from wp-admin: who may use them, how many runs per day, and what happens when the wallet is empty.
  • Turning it on takes a license, a funded token wallet and a few settings — no code. Going further (auto-apply on upload, routing edited photos into your own QA or CRM) is custom development.

A customer uploads a selfie to put on a t-shirt. The shot is fine for Instagram — but the room behind her becomes a hard grey box when it prints, and the shop either ships it looking wrong or a designer opens Photoshop to fix it by hand. A second customer drops a 640 x 360 px screenshot onto a mug; at mug size that photo prints soft, and nobody tells her until the proof comes back blurry.

Cmsmart Product Designer 2.17.0 lets you remove backgrounds and upscale customer photos with two AI tools next to every uploaded photo. The customer fixes her own photo in seconds, the order never stops for a manual edit, and the print file is the one she approved. This case study covers what it costs today, what the tools do (and don't), how to turn them on, and where Cmsmart builds further with custom AI integration.

What does a bad customer photo really cost your print shop?

A messy background or a low-resolution upload is rarely caught before checkout. Cmsmart Product Designer's AI image tools catch it in the designer instead, so the shop stops losing time and orders to photos that needed one more edit.

  • Manual cut-outs. Staff open the photo in an editor to remove a background before the file goes to print — minutes per order that do not scale.
  • Reprints from soft photos. A phone photo that looks sharp on a laptop can be well under 300 DPI at mug, badge or shirt print size.
  • Proof email loops. "Can you resend a higher-resolution photo?" costs a day or more, and some customers never reply.
  • Abandoned designs. A customer who sees an ugly background in the live preview is more likely to close the tab than ask for help.

Two independent numbers back this up. Baymard Institute's usability benchmark found that 25% of ecommerce sites give customers product images that are not good enough to evaluate the product, with low resolution the specific cause at 14% of sites (Baymard Institute, 2020). And in Salsify's 2025 buyer survey, 71% of shoppers say they have returned a product because it did not match what they saw online (Salsify, 2025 Consumer Research Report) — a mismatch a cleaned-up, print-accurate photo helps prevent in the first place.

A typical upload: a portrait with a busy background, flagged by the designer's own low-resolution nudge before the customer even opens the AI tools.

What would it look like if customers fixed their own photos?

In Cmsmart Product Designer, the customer never leaves the product page: she selects her photo, removes the background or upscales it with one click, and the cleaned version becomes the artwork that goes to print — no email, no wait.

Example scenario. A buyer uploads a portrait to a white t-shirt. The background is grey and busy, and would print as a visible box. She selects the photo, clicks Remove background (AI), picks auto-detect subject type and a transparent output, and within seconds sees the cut-out on a transparent grid with Erase/Restore brushes to refine the edge. She applies it — only she prints on the shirt, with no box around her. On a second order, a customer places a small screenshot on a mug; the designer flags it as low-resolution, she clicks Upscale image, picks the smaller upscale factor, previews the result and applies it. Both orders reach Process with a print-ready photo, and the shop never saw either file until it was already fixed.

The result: the cut-out applied to the shirt mockup, with no background box printing around the subject.

Cmsmart insight: in our delivery work, the orders most likely to need a manual fix are photo-led products — mugs, badges, apparel with a photo panel — because the customer is working from whatever shot they already have on their phone. Giving them a fix button at the point of upload catches the problem before it becomes a support ticket.

How does Cmsmart remove backgrounds and upscale customer photos?

Cmsmart Product Designer puts AI remove-background and AI upscale directly on the image toolbar of any uploaded photo layer, backed by the Cmsmart Cloud AI service and a token wallet the merchant controls from wp-admin.

Three pieces work together, shipped in 2.17.0:

  • The image toolbar. Selecting an uploaded photo shows Remove background (AI) and Upscale (AI). Remove background offers subject type, edge softness, a high-detail mode for hair, and transparent-or-white output; Upscale offers a choice of upscale factor with a preview before applying.
  • The low-resolution nudge. A photo under the print's required resolution gets an inline on-canvas suggestion to upscale it with AI.
  • Cmsmart Cloud + the token wallet. Every AI call authenticates with the store's license and domain and draws from one shared balance, visible under Cmsmart Cloud → AI Tools and Billing. The shopper never sees a token count or a price.

This is narrower than AI Preflight before production (also 2.17.0): Preflight runs on the order's print PDF in wp-admin, where an admin reviews resolution, color mode, embedded fonts, bleed and transparency and applies a fix for each. The buyer-facing tool in the designer only addresses resolution. Cmsmart ships exactly two buyer-side photo edits: remove background and upscale. AI Design, a separate tool, generates new art from a text prompt only with the merchant's own OpenAI API key.

What's the business value of built-in background removal and upscaling?

Cmsmart's AI image tools turn a photo problem into a self-service fix, which shows up as fewer abandoned photo-product designs, less staff time on manual cut-outs, and cleaner artwork reaching your print queue.

BenefitHow it shows up in your businessKPI to track
Fewer abandoned designsCustomer fixes the photo herself instead of closing the tabDesigner completion rate on photo products
Less manual cleanup timeStaff stop editing every photo order before printPrepress minutes per order
Fewer reprintsLow-resolution photos are caught and upscaled before ProcessReprint rate on photo SKUs
Clean design travels with the orderThe edited artwork, not the raw photo, reaches the cart and the print fileOrders needing a manual art-file fix

Back-of-envelope ROI: if your store takes N orders a month on photo-upload products, and staff spend M minutes per order on cleanup or chasing a better photo at an hourly cost of C, the manual workflow costs roughly N × M × (C / 60) a month — before the orders lost to abandonment or returned for a bad print. Put your own numbers in.

Demand for custom, photo-personalized products keeps growing: the global print-on-demand market reached an estimated $11.38 billion in 2025, projected to reach $61.79 billion by 2034 (IMARC Group, 2025) — more photo-driven orders, and more photo-quality problems, for the stores that sell them.

How do you set up AI image tools in Cmsmart Product Designer?

You set up Cmsmart's AI image tools from wp-admin in a few steps: confirm the plugin version, turn on the AI master switch and the two image tools, set who may use them and a usage limit, then fund the token wallet.

  1. Confirm you're on 2.17.0 or later. Check Plugins in wp-admin — the AI image tools ship in this release. Full feature list: Cmsmart AI hub and the Product Designer plugin page.
  2. Open Cmsmart Cloud → AI Tools and turn on the master switch AI in the design tool. Off, the AI buttons disappear from the storefront and no token can be spent.
  3. Choose who may use it: Everyone (smoothest, you pay every run), Members (free account first, becomes a lead), or Customers who have ordered (cheapest, fewest leads).
  4. Turn on AI Background Remover and AI Image Upscale, pick an upscale engine (Lanczos is faster; Real-ESRGAN is sharper but costs more), and set a daily runs-per-customer limit and a pause threshold.
  5. Fund the token wallet under Cmsmart Cloud → Billing, then test both tools as a guest on a photo-upload product before you announce them.

Token prices, captured from Cmsmart Cloud → Billing in October 2026: Starter $29/mo for 3,000 tokens, Pro $99/mo for 20,000 tokens, Business $299/mo for 100,000 tokens, Partner $999/mo for 500,000 tokens. Each renewal replaces the balance; unused tokens do not carry over. Plans may change — check the current prices in your own Billing tab before budgeting.

Going further with custom development

The built-in tools fix one photo at a time when a customer clicks a button. Cmsmart's custom development team builds the automation and integration around that — applying fixes automatically, routing results into your other systems, or adding review steps your store needs.

  • Auto-apply on upload. Some stores don't want to rely on the customer noticing the nudge. Cmsmart builds a rule that runs background removal or upscaling automatically for chosen products the moment a photo is uploaded.
  • AI-edited designs into your MIS/ERP. A production system needs the cleaned artwork, not the raw upload, in its own queue. Cmsmart builds the integration that pushes the finished design and print-ready PDF into your MIS, ERP or ticketing system on order placement.
  • A human review step before Process. Some categories (photo gifts with faces, licensed art) need a person to glance at the AI cut-out before it ships. Cmsmart builds an approval queue for staff review, separate from the existing Customer Design approval box.
  • Lead capture tuned to your CRM. The built-in "Members" option collects a free account per AI click but stops there. Cmsmart builds the sync that pushes those leads, with the in-progress design, into your CRM or email platform.
  • AI Design with your own OpenAI key. Generating art from a text prompt is a different capability from editing an uploaded photo, and only runs with the merchant's own OpenAI API key. Cmsmart builds a curated prompt library and moderation workflow around it.

Delivery follows the same path for every custom build: discovery → solution design → sprints → QA → launch → support, the same model behind our ecommerce project case studies.

Frequently asked questions

What do the AI image tools actually do, exactly?

Remove background cuts a photo's subject onto a transparent or white background; Upscale enlarges a low-resolution photo toward print quality. Cmsmart ships exactly these two buyer-side photo edits, nothing else.

Does the AI fix print-file problems like color mode or bleed?

No. Those checks run on the print PDF through AI Preflight in wp-admin, where an admin applies the fix. The buyer-facing tool in the designer addresses resolution only.

Can customers use these tools without creating an account?

Depends on the audience setting under Cmsmart Cloud → AI Tools: Everyone (no account), Members (account on first AI click), or Customers who have ordered.

What happens when the token wallet runs out?

Customers never see a balance or a price. The AI buttons show a lock or hide completely, and you get an email the first time the balance runs out, then at most one digest a day after.

Can Cmsmart generate new images with AI, not just edit uploads?

Only through the separate AI Design tool, and only with your own OpenAI API key — it is not powered by the shared Cmsmart token wallet.

What does it cost to run?

Each run is metered in tokens from your wallet, never charged to the shopper. See the plan prices captured above, in your own Cmsmart Cloud → Billing tab — plans may change.

Stop losing photo-product orders to bad uploads

Turn on remove-background and upscale in your own store, or have Cmsmart build the automation around them — auto-apply rules, MIS integration, review queues — for your specific catalog.
