Applies to Cmsmart Product Designer (NBDesigner) 2.18.0 · Updated October 2026. Covers the AI Tools settings, the Files and order screens, and the Customer Design approval box used to run AI print preflight on WooCommerce orders.

In short

  • Turn on the Preflight Quality Checker in Cmsmart Cloud so every saved design is scanned for resolution/DPI, colour mode, bleed, fonts and transparency before it reaches production.
  • The scan writes a status (Not checked, Low DPI, Print-ready) onto the order's design and onto the Files list, so staff read the result instead of opening every file by eye.
  • It takes a settings change, a DPI target, a choice between manual or automatic runs, and a short habit of checking the Files screen before you approve artwork.

What does a bad print file actually cost your shop?

Every order with a muddy, low-resolution or wrongly-coloured design costs a shop staff time, press time and a customer who has to wait for a reprint. Cmsmart Product Designer's AI preflight catches resolution, colour and bleed problems on the order before anyone sends the file to a press, so the cost shows up as a warning on a screen instead of a wasted sheet.

If nobody checks artwork before it prints, the usual failure modes are familiar to anyone who has run a print queue:

  • Low-resolution uploads. A 150-DPI phone photo for a badge or door hanger looks fine on screen and pixelates on paper.
  • Wrong colour mode. RGB artwork prints duller and shifted once it hits a CMYK workflow, and nobody catches it until the proof is in hand.
  • Missing bleed. A design cropped exactly to the trim line leaves a white sliver the moment the cutter is a fraction of a millimetre off.
  • Staff time eyeballing files. Someone opens every design and guesses whether it's good enough — on a busy store, that is a job in itself.
  • Reprints and refunds. A file that slips through becomes wasted substrate, lost press time, and an unhappy customer instead of a satisfied one.

The global commercial printing market is on track for roughly $594 billion in 2026, growing toward $704 billion by 2031 (Mordor Intelligence, 2026) — more of that volume moving online means more artwork arriving than any small team can eyeball file by file.

What does it look like when preflight runs for you?

With AI preflight on, a design that fails resolution or colour checks is flagged automatically — on the order, in the Files list, or inside the online designer before checkout — so your team reviews a short list of real problems instead of scanning every order that comes in.

Example scenario. A batch of sticker orders comes in overnight. By the time the shop opens, every design has already been scanned for resolution, colour mode and bleed. One file shows up on the Files screen tagged "Low DPI" instead of blending in with the rest. Staff open that one file, request a sharper image, and let everything else move straight to production — nobody opened 30 files to find the one that mattered.

That is the shift AI preflight is built for: the status is already on the screen before a human looks. Talk to an ecommerce expert if you want this wired into a review queue your team already uses.

How does Cmsmart's AI preflight actually work?

Cmsmart Product Designer runs the same AI preflight engine on two places: the online designer, where a buyer can check their own upload before checkout, and your wp-admin, where staff run or automate the check on the files attached to an order — both scoring resolution/DPI, colour mode, bleed, fonts and transparency.

The building blocks, and what is in the plugin today versus what is custom development:

  • Cmsmart Cloud AI engine (in the plugin). One scanning and auto-fix service backs Preflight, Background Remover and Image Upscale, billed from a single token wallet.
  • AI Tools settings (in the plugin). Cmsmart Cloud → AI Tools is where you enable the Preflight Quality Checker, set the Required DPI, and choose when it runs on order files.
  • Online designer check (in the plugin). With AI enabled for customers, the design tool can run the same resolution check on an upload before checkout — one of the three customer-facing AI tools your audience setting controls.
  • Files and order screens (in the plugin). Cmsmart → Files lists every design with a Preflight column (Not checked / Low DPI / Print-ready) and a DPI figure; the order screen shows the same status next to the line item.
  • Customer Design approval (in the plugin). The Accept/Decline box on the WooCommerce order screen is where staff act on a flagged design and notify the customer with a reason.
  • Per-product preflight profiles (custom development). The core settings apply one DPI target store-wide. A stricter rule for packaging dielines, or a different floor per product type, is something Cmsmart builds on top of the core engine.

Printers care about this scan for a reason: a print-ready PDF needs embedded fonts and unambiguous CMYK or ICC-managed colour to print correctly without anyone phoning the designer to ask what went wrong — the PDF/X family of standards exists to guarantee exactly that (Datalogics, 2026). Cmsmart's preflight checks the same categories — resolution, colour mode, bleed, fonts, transparency — before an order gets anywhere near that stage.

What's the business value of catching print problems before production?

Cmsmart's AI preflight turns artwork quality into something you can see on a screen and track over time, instead of something a press operator discovers after the sheet is printed — which is where the time and material savings for a web-to-print shop actually come from.

BenefitHow it shows up in your businessKPI to track
Fewer reprintsLow-resolution or wrong-colour files get flagged before a press ever touches themReprints per 100 orders
Less manual QA timeStaff open the Files screen's Low DPI filter instead of every design in the queueMinutes spent reviewing artwork per order
Faster time to productionClean files move straight from Awaiting review to In production with no manual checkHours from order placed to production start
Fewer customer disputesA flagged design gets a decline-and-reason message before printing, not a refund afterRefund/reprint requests tied to artwork quality

The Cmsmart Cloud overview tracks this for you once preflight is on: a 30-day panel of AI operations run, how many were defects caught before the job reached production, and an accuracy rate for fixes that passed a re-check without manual rework. The figures are specific to your own order volume and catalogue from day one — the panel is where you watch the trend, not a number we can promise in advance.

Rough math for your own store: if staff spend m minutes per order eyeballing artwork across n design orders a month, manual QA alone costs m × n minutes a month at your hourly rate — before counting a single reprint. Preflight turns "open every file" into "open the ones the Files screen flagged."

AI print preflight setup WooCommerce: how do you configure it?

You install Cmsmart Product Designer, configure the Preflight Quality Checker in Cmsmart Cloud → AI Tools, and then read the result on two screens: the Files list and the order's design status — no extra plugin or service to connect.

If the plugin isn't installed and licensed yet, start with the installation and activation guide — it covers the WooCommerce + HPOS setup and the License screen this preflight feature needs. Once the plugin is active:

  1. Go to Cmsmart → Cmsmart Cloud → AI Tools.
  2. Under AI tools, find Preflight Quality Checker and switch it to Enabled.
  3. Set Required DPI — 300 is the recommended default, the resolution most offset presses expect (double the 150 lpi halftone screen commercial printing is built around — PrintNinja, 2026).
  4. Choose When to run preflight on orders: Manual keeps a human clicking "Run preflight" per file; an automatic option runs it once per order and spends tokens every time.
  5. Set Pause automatic runs below so an automatic schedule stops itself rather than draining your token balance unattended.
  6. To let buyers see a resolution check before checkout too, scroll up to AI for customers, turn on AI in the design tool, and choose who may use it — Everyone, Members, or Customers who have ordered.
Allowed file types and Min. resolution DPI for JPG/JPEG image fields in Cmsmart Product Designer 2.18.0 Upload design settings
Cmsmart Product Designer 2.18.0, WP Admin > Cmsmart Settings > Upload design: a separate "Min. resolution DPI" field gates uploads at the door, before AI preflight ever scores the saved design.

Cmsmart insight: don't confuse Upload design's "Min. resolution DPI for JPG/JPEG image" with Preflight's Required DPI. The upload field is a hard gate at the moment a customer picks a file — on the store we captured, it was left at 0 (off). Preflight is a quality score that runs after the file is saved and can offer an AI upscale fix instead of a flat rejection. Most shops want both: a loose upload gate so customers aren't blocked, and a preflight score staff act on.

Once orders start coming in with preflight switched on, here is where you read the result and act on it:

  1. Open Cmsmart → Files. The top banner reads out how many files "need your attention" — on the store we captured, 286 were flagged Low DPI and 293 were Not checked yet.
  2. Use the Preflight and DPI columns, or the Review low-DPI files button, to jump straight to the designs that need a look instead of scrolling the whole list.
  3. Click Review on a flagged file, or open the order directly — the order's line item shows the same status chip (for example "Not checked") next to the design and a link to View file.
  4. In the WooCommerce order screen, scroll to the Customer Design box. Check the flagged design, choose Accept or Decline from the dropdown, add a reason in Send notify mail, and send it — the customer gets a reason instead of a silent hold.
  5. Once a replacement file is in and checked clean, open the design's Create PDF tab and click Regenerate print-ready PDF so the order's print file matches the fixed artwork before it moves to production.

One note from testing this end to end: after the online designer's one-click Auto-fix, the confirmation message didn't always repaint right away in our run — click Re-run to see the updated score rather than trusting the first screen.

What can Cmsmart build on top of AI preflight?

The core Preflight Quality Checker applies one DPI target and one set of checks store-wide; Cmsmart builds custom rules, routing and reporting on top of that engine for shops whose production floor needs more than a single on/off switch.

Once the basics are running, these are the extensions shops actually need — all delivered as custom development on top of the core plugin, never implied as something the settings screen already does:

  • Per-product preflight profiles. A stricter bleed and colour rule for packaging dielines, a looser DPI floor for large-format banners — the core settings apply one rule to every product; Cmsmart builds per-product-type profiles for shops printing more than one kind of job.
  • Escalation and routing. Cmsmart can route a flagged order straight into a Slack channel, a helpdesk ticket, or an MIS/ERP queue the moment it fails preflight, instead of relying on staff checking the Files screen.
  • Batch preflight for wholesale orders. A B2B buyer uploading 40 SKUs at once needs one pass/fail summary across the batch, not 40 individual reviews — Cmsmart builds that view for B2B and multi-vendor catalogues.
  • PDF/X-aware export rules. Tightening the print-ready PDF to a specific PDF/X conformance level for printers who require it from every supplier.
  • Custom auto-fix policies. Deciding automatically when to auto-upscale versus when a human must approve the fix, based on order value or product type.

Projects like these follow the same delivery model as any Cmsmart build: discovery and scoping with an ecommerce consultant, a written milestone proposal, kickoff, delivery in sprints you approve one at a time, QA, and ongoing support — tracked in your own dashboard (see the project delivery model).

Frequently asked questions

Does AI preflight run automatically, or do I have to click something?

Both are options. "When to run preflight on orders" in Cmsmart Cloud → AI Tools can stay manual — you click Run preflight per file — or switch to automatic, which scans once per order and spends tokens every run.

What exactly does the check look at — just resolution?

No. The Preflight Quality Checker covers resolution/DPI, colour mode, bleed, fonts and transparency in one scan, not resolution alone.

Where do I actually see the result on an order?

Two places: the Files screen has a Preflight column and a DPI figure for every design, with a "Review low-DPI files" shortcut; the order's line item shows the same status chip next to the design.

What happens to a file that fails the check — can I still ship it?

Nothing blocks the order automatically. Preflight flags the file; a staff member reviews it in the Customer Design box and chooses Accept or Decline, optionally sending the customer a reason.

Does turning on AI for customers cost tokens for every visitor?

If the audience is set to Everyone, yes — every anonymous visitor who runs an AI tool spends from your wallet with no account attached. Members or "Customers who have ordered" narrows that, and a usage-limit field caps runs per customer per day.

Can Cmsmart set different preflight rules for different products?

Not in the core settings — the Required DPI and rule set apply store-wide. Per-product preflight profiles, like a stricter bleed check for packaging, are custom development on top of the core engine.
