Applies to Cmsmart Stores 0.4.5 (parent + child themes) and Cmsmart Product Designer 2.17.2 · Updated October 2026. This guide shows how to install WooCommerce print shop theme files the right way, step by step, from a fresh WordPress install with WooCommerce, captured on 2026-10-11.

In short

  • Outcome: a live WooCommerce storefront built on a Cmsmart Store child theme, ready for products, pricing and the online designer.
  • How it works: you upload the Cmsmart Stores parent theme first, then the child theme for your niche, activate the child, and run the bundled recommended-plugins installer.
  • What it takes: a WordPress 6.7+ / PHP 8.0+ host, WooCommerce, your theme zip files from the Cmsmart dashboard, and (for the online designer) a Cmsmart Product Designer licence.

To install WooCommerce print shop theme files correctly, upload the parent theme first and the matching child theme second: a Cmsmart Store only activates once WordPress finds the parent already installed, so the single most common support ticket is a child theme that refuses to activate because the parent, Cmsmart Stores, was never uploaded first, or because the wrong zip file was chosen entirely.

This guide walks through the exact upload order on a fresh WordPress site: parent theme, child theme, activation, recommended plugins, and the Cmsmart Product Designer plugin that powers the online editor. It also covers the two upload errors every merchant eventually hits, and which of the six child themes fits which kind of print or personalization business.

What problems show up before your store even launches?

Most install failures are not WordPress problems, they are sequencing problems. Cmsmart Stores ships as a parent theme plus six niche child themes, and WordPress enforces the parent/child relationship strictly: upload the child first, or upload an old package, and the install stops with an error instead of a working store.

The pains we see on support tickets before a merchant gets a theme live:

  • Wrong order. The child zip (cmsmart-print-shop-store-0.4.5.zip, for example) is uploaded before the parent cmsmart-stores-0.4.5.zip, so WordPress refuses to activate it.
  • Wrong or stale file. An old 0.4.4 package, or a plugin zip dropped into the theme uploader by mistake, fails with a missing style.css error.
  • Skipped plugins. WooCommerce never gets installed, or the theme's bundled recommended-plugins installer gets dismissed, or the Cmsmart Product Designer plugin is never actually installed, and the storefront looks unfinished or the designer never appears.
  • Expecting demo content. Cmsmart Stores 0.4.5 installs as a clean block theme with no sample products, images or pages baked in, so a merchant expecting a "demo site" is left staring at an empty Site Editor.
  • Staff time. Every failed upload means another zip download, another support message, and another delay before the store owner can start adding products.

What does a store look like once Cmsmart Stores is active?

Once the parent and the right child theme are both active, a merchant has a working block theme shell: WordPress's Site Editor for the header, home template and styles, WooCommerce installed and the theme's recommended free add-ons available through its own installer, and the Cmsmart Product Designer plugin ready to turn any product into a customizable one.

Example scenario. A merchant signs into the Cmsmart dashboard, downloads the parent zip and the Print Shop child zip, and uploads both inside wp-admin in under five minutes. After activating the child theme, they set a logo and colors in the Site Editor, install WooCommerce, pick a few recommended free add-ons, then install the Cmsmart Product Designer plugin and start adding their first print product. Nothing on the storefront is pre-filled; everything they see is what they put there.

That last point matters: there is no demo content pack bundled with 0.4.5. If a merchant wants a finished-looking storefront with sample pages, categories and products imported for them rather than building it block by block, that is a done-for-you service, not a theme feature: see Cmsmart Store preset installation & demo import. We never promise a ship date for a demo pack inside the free theme package because there isn't one yet.

How does the Cmsmart Store parent and child system work?

Cmsmart Stores uses WordPress's native parent/child theme system: one parent theme holds the shared block templates and styling engine, and a thin child theme per niche supplies the industry-specific home page, colors and demo imagery references. Installing the plugin, Cmsmart Product Designer, is a separate step from the theme.

Four building blocks make up a Cmsmart Store install:

  • Parent theme — cmsmart-stores 0.4.5. A WordPress block theme (requires WordPress 6.7+ and PHP 8.0+) that supplies the shared template parts, patterns and site styles every child theme builds on. WordPress.org itself recommends hosts run a current PHP release since older PHP versions have reached end of life and carry known security risks, so treat 8.0+ as a floor, not a target.
  • Child theme — one of six, folder name printstores-*. Print Shop, T-Shirt, Gift, 3D Print, Boxed, or Boxed 2 — each ships as its own zip (cmsmart-<niche>-store-0.4.5.zip) and declares the parent in its stylesheet header, which is why WordPress checks for the parent before it will activate.
  • WooCommerce. The cart, checkout and catalog engine the theme's templates are built around; installed as its own plugin, not bundled in the theme zip or on the recommended-plugins list.
  • Cmsmart Product Designer (NBDesigner). A separate plugin (licence required) that turns a WooCommerce product into a live, on-page customizer. The theme gives you a store; the designer plugin gives that store a design tool, including a print-ready PDF that matches the order — the same file layout as the mockup, generated automatically once an order comes in (added in Cmsmart Product Designer 2.17).

Cmsmart insight: keep the parent theme installed even if you only ever run one child store. WordPress uses the parent for every template the child doesn't override, so deleting "the one you're not using" breaks the child that is active.

What's the business value of choosing the right store theme up front?

Getting the parent/child install right the first time means a merchant spends their setup hours on products and pricing, the parts of the store that actually make money, instead of re-downloading zip files or troubleshooting a blank activation screen.

How do you install WooCommerce print shop theme files (parent + child)?

You set it up in two uploads: the Cmsmart Stores parent theme, then your chosen niche child theme, both through WordPress's standard Appearance > Themes > Upload Theme screen, followed by activation, installing WooCommerce, and the theme's own recommended-plugins installer for the free add-ons.

  1. Sign in to your Cmsmart dashboard and download two files: the parent cmsmart-stores-0.4.5.zip and the child zip for the store you picked above (e.g. cmsmart-print-shop-store-0.4.5.zip).
  2. In wp-admin, go to Appearance > Themes > Add New Theme > Upload Theme.
  3. Choose the parent zip file and click Install Now. Do not activate it yet.
  4. Wait for WordPress to confirm "Theme installed successfully." for the parent.
  5. Go back to Add New Theme > Upload Theme and upload the child zip for your chosen store.
  6. WordPress checks for the parent automatically, confirms it is already installed, then installs the child theme.
  7. Open the Themes screen, find your child theme's card, and click Activate.
  8. Confirm the Themes screen now shows your child theme labelled Active.
  9. Open the WordPress dashboard: the theme adds its own Recommended settings and Recommended plugins menu items under Appearance.
  10. Install WooCommerce first, via Plugins > Add New Plugin — it is not on the theme's recommended-plugins list.
  11. Open Recommended plugins and install whichever of the 15 free add-ons you want (cart recovery, SEO, search, a lighter checkout, swatches and more).
  12. Separately, install and activate the Cmsmart Product Designer plugin (a licence is required to unlock the online designer) and confirm it shows as Active on the Plugins screen next to WooCommerce.
  13. Open Appearance > Editor to set your logo, colors and home template before adding your first product.

Troubleshooting

"The theme is missing the style.css stylesheet." You uploaded the wrong file (a plugin zip, or an outer folder around the real theme zip) or an old 0.4.4 package that doesn't match the current parent. Re-download the current 0.4.5 zip from your dashboard and upload that one instead.

"The parent theme is missing." This appears when the parent theme zip from step 3 has not been installed yet; WordPress requires it before it will activate any niche child theme. Install that parent zip first, then re-upload or re-activate your child theme.

Which store should I pick?

Can Cmsmart customize or pre-load my store beyond the basics?

The theme install gives you the structure; Cmsmart builds the rest as custom development when a merchant wants more than a blank block theme: demo content imported for them, a home page designed to brand, or catalog and pricing migrated from an old store.

What we build on top of a fresh Cmsmart Store install, project by project:

  • Preset & demo import. Since 0.4.5 has no bundled demo content, our team installs the theme, imports sample pages, menus and products, and hands back a store that matches a chosen preset preview. See Cmsmart Store preset installation & demo import.
  • Home template & brand styling. Custom Site Editor templates, color palettes and typography built to match an existing brand instead of the child theme's default look.
  • Catalog & pricing migration. Moving products, categories and price-matrix rules over from an existing WooCommerce store or a different platform.
  • Product designer configuration. Setting up design areas, print options and output settings in Cmsmart Product Designer for your specific product range once the theme is live.
  • ERP / POS integration. Connecting the new store's orders and inventory to the systems a print shop or multi-channel seller already runs on.

Delivery runs the same way for every engagement: discovery call, a short solution design, build sprints, QA against a staging copy of your store, launch, then support. See the delivery model at Cmsmart ecommerce projects.

Why Cmsmart instead of a generic WooCommerce theme?

Cmsmart has been building WooCommerce storefronts and the Cmsmart Product Designer plugin since 2012, as a Netbase JSC division, and the parent/child store system comes from that same team, so the theme and the designer plugin are built to work together rather than bolted on afterward.

Cmsmart has delivered 6,300+ client projects and currently runs 1,800+ live stores for clients in 80+ countries, and is rated 4.2 on Trustpilot (404 reviews). One long-time plugin user, reviewing the Cmsmart Product Designer on Trustpilot, put it this way:

"We have had the NB Designer plugin installed for three years and have experienced absolutely no problems during that time. It is wonderful to see their commitment to continuous development, with new features being added frequently to keep the software current and highly capable." — Web Developer, Trustpilot review

Frequently asked questions

How long does installing a Cmsmart Store take?

Uploading the parent theme, the child theme and activating takes a few minutes. Installing WooCommerce and the recommended plugins afterward typically adds another 15-30 minutes, depending on your host's speed and how many of the recommended plugins you choose to install.

Do I need a licence to install the theme?

The Cmsmart Stores parent and child theme zips come from your Cmsmart dashboard download area. The theme itself installs and activates like any uploaded WordPress theme; a licence applies to the Cmsmart Product Designer plugin, which unlocks the live online design tool once installed.

Does Cmsmart Stores include demo content or sample products?

Not in 0.4.5. The theme installs as a clean block theme with no sample pages, images or products. If you want a store pre-filled to match a preset preview, that is a separate, done-for-you service: Cmsmart Store preset installation & demo import.

What does "the theme is missing the style.css stylesheet" mean?

It means WordPress couldn't find a valid theme stylesheet in the zip you uploaded — usually because the wrong file was chosen, or because the zip is an old 0.4.4 package that doesn't match the current theme files. Download the current 0.4.5 zip from your dashboard and try again.

Can I change which child theme is active later?

Yes. Because every child theme shares the same cmsmart-stores parent, switching from, say, Print Shop to Gift is a matter of uploading and activating the new child theme; you don't need to reinstall the parent.

Does the store theme work without the Cmsmart Product Designer plugin?

Yes, as a standard WooCommerce storefront. The online product customization — letting a buyer personalize a product before checkout — needs the separate Cmsmart Product Designer plugin installed and licensed; the theme does not include the designer itself.
